Round Bastion

0:000:00

The twin sibling of the Protection Bastion is the Round Bastion, which protects the gate and one-third of the northern wall. The walls visible today are completely rebuilt walls, as both the Round Bastion and the northern connecting wall were destroyed; they were excavated and rebuilt in the 2000s.

You might notice that the color of the stones is different from the color of the stones of the gate or the Protection Bastion. The reasons for this are the rules in effect at the time of their construction: it must be clear to the visitor what is original masonry and what is reconstruction or conservation. Every stone that is grayish is the original of the castle, while the lighter, orange-beige color making up the Round Bastion is without exception a reconstruction.

The Round Bastion matches the Protection Bastion in almost all its dimensions, and its function was also the same: it functioned as an earth-filled bastion during the era of the Ottoman-Hungarian wars. The wall running from the bastion towards the gate is the most massive structure of the entire castle: there is a timber-reinforced earthwork between two outer stone walls. Each layer is 130 centimeters individually, so we are talking about a wall nearly 5 meters wide here.

We now continue the tour within the castle walls; see you inside the gate!
