Welcome to Nógrád Castle – the place from which the settlement and the entire county once got their name. The volcanic castle hill in the middle of the village has an elevation of 286 meters above sea level, rising 50-60 meters above its surroundings.

From the top of the steep-sloped hill, a wonderful panorama opens to the eastern slopes of the Börzsöny mountains, but you can also see the Cserhát the Visegrád the Pilis and the Naszály Mountain, and on a clear day, even the Tatra mountains are visible.

The origin of the castle's name can be found in Slavic languages: Novi-Grad or Novo-hrad means "new castle". This assumes that there might have once been an "old castle," but its location has not been found to this day: an earlier fortress could have stood on the hill and been rebuilt, or it could have been located in another strategically advantageous place.

The former town of Nógrád stretched at the foot of the castle, in the place of today's cemeteries. Throughout history, both the castle and the town played a key role, although traces of the latter are now difficult to find.

During the tour, you will learn about the wonderful and exciting history of Nógrád, in 11 more parts. Join us on a journey that spans centuries and recharge with experiences. Be sure to study the posted house rules, the "Castle Rules," to have the best possible experience! See you at the next point!
